5 Ways To Connect Virtually Over The Holidays

#1 - Connect Over The Phone Or Zoom

This is the obvious one. By this point in 2020 we’re all versed in Zoom calls, the sometimes goofy backgrounds that go with them, and communicating virtually in life with social distancing. But it’s how you approach it that we’re focusing on. For starters, it’s good to lean into what works best for you, especially during the holidays when we should be resting and recharging.

Not feeling video when you’re connecting with family and friends? A good old fashioned phone call works just fine.

If you are up for video over Zoom or FaceTime, have some fun with it! Break out a bad Christmas sweater, dress up, or try some of the tips that follow below…

#2 - Show & Tell

Who says Show & Tell is just for grade-schoolers? If you’re looking for ways to connect that feel a little more special than an everyday check in, try timing your video call with gift opening. Or while you’re cooking so you can show what you’re making to celebrate the holidays. Pick out some favorite or thoughtful gifts and talk about who gave you that gift, why it’s special, and why they are special to you. It’s a meaningful way to show gratitude for people and share who matters to you more so than to show off a new gadget or object. Ask your friends and family to do the same — what’s a particularly good or thoughtful gift they received?

#3 - Watch A Movie Together With Teleparty

Don’t worry, we’re not about to make a suggestion that turns quality time into tech support time. Teleparty is a free Chrome browser app that allows you easily watch Netflix movies with someone remotely so you can watch at the same time! In a year when we haven’t been able to go to theaters or spend as much time as we’d like with loved ones, this is a great way to fire up your favorite festive movies and watch together.

#4 - Apps for Group Games

If you enjoy games and trivia, there are plenty of options to help you connect and start having fun!

  • Houseparty is a group video chat app with built-in game for iOS, Android, or Chrome browser

  • Kahoot offers trivia, brain games, and educational content you can use with up to 10 people

  • Drawasaurus lets you play with others as you take turns doing your best to draw a word you’re given while others try to guess the word

#5 - Enjoy The Outdoors

We’re fortunate to be in beautiful Colorado with the great outdoors accessible to us. If you’re feeling a little stir-crazy, get outside for a walk around the park or head out for an easy hike to enjoy some fresh air. Meet up with a friend or family, wear your masks to stay safe, and enjoy a moment in nature. Research shows spending time in nature can help reduce “stress and anxiety, improve mood, and boost feelings of happiness and wellbeing.

Plus, scientists and health officials are beginning to link Vitamin D deficiency with higher risks of contracting COVID-19 and having more severe symptoms. We are fortunate to have 300 days of sunshine in sunny Colorado, so take advantage!
