Frequently Asked Questions FOR TEENS

Why should my teen get a facial?

Adolescence is a tricky time for skin. Stress, hormone imbalances and sports activities can all contribute to not-so-fun problems like oily skin, redness and acne (which can lead to life-long scarring). Facials and proper skincare are an essential part of wellness that work from the outside-in to provide a deep cleanse, promote healthy skin turnover, and create a lifetime of healthy skin.

Additionally, picking at the skin can often push the bacteria deeper into the pore, spread it across your face, or worse, leave scars that will be with you for life. Our skincare experts can provide knowledge on the best way to navigate blemishes, pimples and acne to maintain a healthy complexion for years to come.

What if my teen has acne?

85% of teens experience acne, a disorder of the skin caused by inflammation of the skin glands and hair follicles. Both pimples and acne can be attributed to hormones. When hormones flood the body at the onset of puberty, the sebaceous glands produce more oil that traps dead skin cells and debris. Just because you have pimples does not mean you have acne.

While there is no cure for acne, establishing the right routine and knowledge with the help of our estheticians can help to manage acne.

How can my teen continue to keep their skin healthy at home once their facial is over?

We're here to help! Your esthetician can provide product recommendations and provide you with the appropriate Skincare Guide for your skin type as well as discuss any follow-up treatment recommendations.

We encourage all of our guests to make the most of their time at Jalan by maintaining a healthy skincare routine once at home. Drink plenty of water, wash off makeup before bed, and use a cleanser and moisturizer appropriate for your skin type and the current season. Our estheticians are always happy to provide tips, tricks and product recommendations for your at-home skincare routine.

Which types of skincare products do you use?

Our team uses Elemental Herbology and Jurlique skincare lines, which are plant-based products often found exclusively at five-star resorts.

Both Jurlique and Elemental Herbology offer cleansers, serums, masks and moisturizers for different skin types and concerns, and formulate their products without parabens, artificial ingredients, and fragrances. Our skincare experts love them because they contain effective, healthy plant compounds, herbal extracts, essential fatty acids, botanical oils, vitamins, minerals, pure essential oils and more to contribute to a lifetime of glowing skin. You can read more about the products we offer here.

Following your treatment, our team will lay out a selection of products used during your treatment based on your skincare needs and the time of year. If you're not ready to take any home with you, please don't worry! It's our goal for you to leave the spa feeling deeply relaxed, so we avoid pressuring you into purchasing a product, and are often happy to provide a sample of something you're interested in trying, but not ready to commit to just yet.

What's an extraction?

Extraction is a technique that applies pressure to congested areas of your complexion for a deeper, fuller cleansing of the face. This part of the service only lasts for a few moments and is followed by a deeply relaxing massage, mask and moisturizing combination to quickly bring you back to a relaxed state.  Extractions aren't for every skin type or concern. Our estheticians are trained, licensed professionals who utilize specific techniques to clear and treat visible blemishes to avoid the risk for scarring, which is especially important for sensitive adolescent skin.

Slight redness following extractions typically lasts 24-48 hours at most (which is why you should always schedule a facial a few days before an important event).

What's your Minor Policy?

To ensure the health and wellness of everyone at our spa, we have an established policy for our youngest guests. Please note that at no point in time may a minor be left in our building without proper supervision. Instead, please make childcare arrangements for a relaxing spa day for you and all of our guests.

Guests below the age of 18 require a parent/guardian signature to receive a service at the spa. Guests between 16-17 years of age require a signed parent/guardian consent form, but a parent/guardian does not need to be present. Guests between 10-15 years of age require a parent/guardian consent form and the parent/guardian must be present at the time of service. Note that parents/guardians can both receive facial services at the same time provided that the service times are equal in length.
